HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PRODUCE
Counter Top
Ripen your fruits at room temperature, before placing in the fridge:
- Bananas
- Tomatoes
- Citrus (lemons, lime, oranges)
- Peaches
- Mangoes
This maximizes their flavor and sweetness. Just keep a watchful eye on them so they don’t over-ripen.
Pantry
Store the following in a cool, dry, and dark place:
- Garlic
- Potatoes
- Sweet Potatoes
- Onion *Keep onions away from other vegetables
Refrigerator
Most fruits and veggies can be stored in the refrigerator.
- Apples
- Berries
- Grapes
- Citrus
- Green Beans
- Beets
- Broccoli
- Sprouts
A crisper drawer will help protect your produce and keep the moisture in to maintain freshness for longer.*Keep bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, lemons, and limes in a cool, dry area, not in the fridge.
Freezer
Freezing fruits at home is a fast and convenient way to preserve produce at their peak maturity and nutritional quality. Freezing most vegetables at home is a fast, convenient way to preserve produce at their peak maturity and nutritional quality.Freezing is not recommended for::
- Artichokes,
- Squash/zucchini
- Lettuce
- Greens
- Sweet/ any potatoes (other than mashed)
- Sprouts
Tip:: Store carrot, onion, celery scraps in a bag to make your own vegetable broth later.
Additional Produce Care Tips:
CABBAGE, CARROTS, CAULIFLOWER, CELERY, CORN should be stored inside husks.
CUCUMBERS, EGGPLANT, DELICATE HERBS (CILANTRO, PARSLEY, MINT) can be stored in a glass of water, covered loosely with a plastic bag.
HARDIER HERBS (OREGANO, ROSEMARY, THYME) can be rolled in a damp paper towel
Store LEAFY GREENS in a dishtowel within a sealed container in the crisper.
MUSHROOMS are best stored in a paper bag
Peel and freeze your dark BANANAS in a clean plastic bag. Use them later in baking or for delicious fruit smoothies.
